The typical marine battery can last 3-5 years, depending on the care it has received and its use (or abuse)!
Get the maximum lifespan from your battery for worry-free boating with these simple tips:
1. Keep the battery terminals and cables clean. Do a visual inspection (link to first blog) before each trip and take corrective action if needed to help maintain the battery’s ability to deliver and accept full voltage.
2. Keep the battery case clean of grime to eliminate shorts and extend the battery’s life.
3. Top off your lead acid battery’s electrolyte in each cell at the start of the season (link to first blog). Never add anything but distilled water to a battery.
4. Always charge the battery to a full charge before storing. Turning your battery switch to off or disconnecting the negative battery cable will keep system drains from discharging the battery.
5. Keeping a smart charger system on the battery while it is not in use for long periods of time will keep the battery at a full state of charge without overcharging. This is the best way to prolong the life of a marine battery.
Your boat battery is the heart of your electrical system and a big investment. Using these five tips will help your battery achieve its maximum lifespan and never leave you stranded.
